What Skylight Do I Need?

We have a skylight that’s perfect for you!

There are three main varieties of skylight available to customers, each with their own features/benefits. These varieties are the Specular Skylights, Roof Windows and Skylight Alternatives.

1. “Specular Skylight Kits”, or “FlexiShaft Skylights”or “Tubular Skylights”, include a highly Reflective Shaft that transfers the light that is captured by the Dome in the roof, down to the room below, generally through a Diffuser panel that is installed in the ceiling to spread the light.

The Reflective Shaft bridges the roof cavity; our FlexiShaft is the most popular type: easy to install, can be cut to length, and can be curved around obstacles in your roof space (such as roof trusses, heating-ducting).

Specular Skylights generally come as complete Kits from 300mm Round (Stocked in Store), up to 1200x600mm (Special Order), to suit the type/size of the room you want to brighten up.

2. “Roof Windows” generally require a plaster shaft to be constructed to bridge the distance from roof to ceiling. From underneath you can look up and see the birds in the sky; they do not feature a diffuser at ceiling level.

Roof Windows can either be “Fixed”, for Natural Light only, or Opening, for the added benefit of Ventilation for the room below. They can be manual opening for windows that are within reach (attic), or electric opening for out of reach installations and can be fitted with “Block-out Blinds”.

Standard sizes run from 800(H)x550(W)mm to 1400(H)x800(W)mm so they fit between standard roof truss spacing of either 600mm or 900mm wide. Larger, custom sizes are available, either as a single unit or as a “Compound Skylight”.

3. “Skylight Alternatives”, or “SolarLights” are ideal for when a traditional skylight is impractical to install. They do not require roof penetration, suit multi-level buildings, have electrical cable instead of shaft and are an easier DIY install. These kits include a “PV Solar Panel” on the roof, a low-voltage “DC Power Cable (9m standard), and an LED light diffuser panel that is designed to mimic natural light.
